Pyrroside B is a natural product isolated from the leaves of Linearifolia. It has shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi, as well as have anti-inflammatory properties. Pyrroside B inhibits bacterial growth by binding to DNA-dependent RNA polymerase and preventing transcription and replication. It also binds to markers expressed at high levels in Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains (e.g., ESX-1 secretion system protein) and inhibits cell growth in culture. The compound has been shown to inhibit the production of tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and serum enzymes, such as dismutase activity, in mice with lung cancer. This drug also has a toxic effect on respiratory system cells, which may be due to its ability to induce apoptosis. Pyrroside B’s anti-inflammatory properties may result from its inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis.
