BI 2536 is a protein kinase inhibitor that specifically blocks the activity of the protein Bcl-2-interacting killer (BIK) by binding to its ATP-binding site. It has been shown to induce apoptosis in cancer cells, including squamous cell carcinoma and HL60 cells. BI 2536 inhibits tumor growth in mice with solid tumours, such as sarcomas and carcinomas, by inducing autophagy. This drug also has an anti-inflammatory effect against mouse tumors through Toll-like receptor 9 activation. BI 2536 induces programmed cell death in cancer tissues by inhibiting the expression of the Mcl-1 protein.
